Phillips & Cohen qui tam cases were part of the largest qui tam settlements in 2003

Dec. 10, 2003 – Two qui tam cases brought on behalf of whistleblowers by Phillips & Cohen LLP contributed to the largest settlements resulting from qui tam cases in 2003, according to a U.S. Department of Justice press release.

HCA Inc. paid the federal government $641 million in 2003, part of which was due to qui tam lawsuits brought by two Phillips & Cohen clients. HCA has paid the federal government a total of $1.7 billion as a result of qui tam lawsuits alleging Medicare fraud, and the whistleblowers in those cases have been awarded a total of $154 million – "by far record recoveries by both the United States and whistleblowers," the Justice Department said.

Northrop Grumman paid a total of $191 million to the federal government to settle three separate qui tam lawsuits. The bulk of the payment – $111 million – was due to a whistleblower case brought on behalf of a whistleblower by Phillips & Cohen. The whistleblower alleged TRW Inc., which Northrop had acquired, had padded bills submitted to the government under space and technology contracts.
